we did lots of research before buying our digital and read that for lots of photographers, their weekend point and shoot choice was the Fuji Fine Pix. Ours is a couple of years old now and there are newer models but i've loved every moment of mine!
Nope, all I can say is it totally stinks when you are cameraless. We tried to use our cruddy computer camera to take some Spring pictures but they turned out all blotchy so I would suggest not trying that.

I don't know what your budget is, but I can't think of better value than the Canon 450D, with the 50mm portrait lens. Good Luck!
